Chicken Skin Music: Gimme Shelter

Chicken Skin Music: Gimme Shelter

Have you ever heard the term “chicken skin music”? It refers to music that is so moving that it gives you goose-bumps. When I listen to this song, and I have listened to it a lot, it does just that, every time. I guess there is some part of me that really resonates with this rendition, the Rolling Stones did it originally and although I love them, their version didn’t make me feel this way.

I think it is the collaboration of all of these amazing artists from around the world, each with their unique sound and emotion pouring in to make this particular brew so potent. There is something about the laid back feel the ‘band’ provides combined with the urgency of the lyrics and the powerful delivery of the singers that I find almost hypnotic, and I’m thinking about the storm that’s threatening. It’s not threatening my life but my humanity. I am torn about what else I can do about the current crises of Syrian refugees, sure I’ve signed petitions, written letters, demonstrated but what else?
This is the power of music and what it can do. I think chicken skin music is an indicator, like a divining rod telling you something very deep is calling you. It may be just that you need to let the genie out of the bottle and see what that feeling is trying to tell you, maybe it’s just to let the wild woman (or man) out and dance furiously, or to dive down and retrieve some buried treasure of memory or emotion, maybe it is that you really want to do something that you have never done before.

I say go for it, let yourself be swept into the unchartered territory that chicken skin music takes you, throw caution to the wind and let your instincts run amok, let your spirit guide you and chances are you will contribute something of value to this planet.

What is your favourite chicken skin music?
